ENTER JACK DANIEL'S TALENT SEARCH

Vinny Da Vinci, Spikiri & T-bo Touch
Vinny Da Vinci, Spikiri & T-bo Touch
Three musical legends that have followed their own authentic path to success have partnered with Jack Daniel's to become the official Jack Daniel's Music Scouts. T-BO Touch, DJ Vinny Da Vinci and Mandla ‘Spikiri' Mofokeng have announced the launch of their search for authentic South African talent.
Whether unsigned musicians, vocalists or DJs, the countrywide search is open to anyone with musical flair. Entrants will be given a valuable platform to demonstrate their skill, including gigs where they will perform to begin securing their own fan-base and impress the Jack Daniel's Music Scouts.
Representing a broad range of music genres, T-BO Touch, DJ Vinny Da Vinci and ‘Spikiri' know what true talent feels like. They are widely regarded as respected authorities in their chosen styles and have followed their own path to success, much like Jack did.
Jack Daniel's and music share a long history, with Jack himself having begun one of the oldest recorded music sponsorships in the 1860s - of the Silver Cornet band.
Jack's whiskey would become the unofficial whiskey of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. Rock ‘n' roll would take over the mantle in the ‘60s and some have said the history of music is dripping with Jack Daniel's. It's been onstage, backstage, in the studios, on the tour bus and in the hands of legends.
With the help of the legendary T-BO, Mandla ‘Spikiri' Mofokeng and Vinny Da Vinci, we'd like to continue Jack's love affair with music by helping showcase up-and-coming artists creating their own authentic sounds.
Entrants can visit www.jackscouts.co.za to enter. The winning artists, as selected by the JD Music Scouts, in addition to receiving exposure through the campaign, will win a trip to the US to discover the history of hip hop and house music.

Label owner and South African House Music legend Dj Christos has re-launched his label Katsaitis Music, which became a major independent label in the motherland. During it’s 14 years of existance, it was focussing on Soulful and Deep House. So far most of Katsaitis Music’s releases were on CD format for the South African Market, where the label looks back on 6 Platinum an 12 Gold selling albums to date.

The first digital release from Katsaitis Music will be ‘Tonic Hd – La Musica Ep’ and has hit Traxsource from the 25th of July. Tonic’s sound has the South African afro feel, yet is very Soulful. ZAKWE'S GOLDEN DEBUT

Zakwe's self titled debut album has officially been awarded gold status in South Africa for sales in excess of 20 000 copies.  The 5 time MTN SAMA nominee announced the good news on his twitter page this afternoon to the delight of his followers and the Hip Hop fraternity at large, with fellow rappers Kwesta, Ntukza (Teargas), and Hip Hop DJ Sizwe Dhlomo all tweeting messages of congratulations. Record executive Sipho Sithole who signed the first South African Hip Hop act to reach gold status Skwatta Kamp was the first to break the news and went on to say that "[Zakwe is] the only Hip Hop artist to go gold in recent times," which further goes to validate why Zakwe was voted "Hip Hop Album of the Year" at the Metro FM Music Awards in his hometown of Durban earlier this year.

KHULI CHANA COLLABORATES WITH THE PARLOTONES

The 5FM Mashlab concept has blown South African audiences away since its inception four months ago and now, voted in by the public, The Parlotones will be collaborating with Khuli Chana to deliver the brand new track within the series.

Mashlab, the brainchild of Jon Savage and Rob Vember, started as an idea in Savage's head that would eventually become one of the most creative social networking projects South Africans have ever witnessed. With a true love of collaborations, Savage decided to let the public participate in a song writing experiment that would see a variety of artists writing and producing tracks together - and the results have been outstanding.

The idea is to bring artists from different genres and cultural backgrounds together, throw them in the studio and have the public decide on theme for the song, genre, subject matter, lyrics and even the iTunes single artwork design. The public votes on all decisions made in the process and ultimately, has a hand in creating a hit.

The first week saw Belville rockers Aking collaborate with Tumi Molekane from Tumi & The Volume. Since then, collaborations with electronic group Iscream And The Chocolate Stix with hip-hop's Reason and indie kids ISO with pop star JR have followed suite.

The next collaboration scheduled sees the multi-award winning indie-pop group The Parlotones team up with hip-hop sensation Khuli Chana. Both artists currently being at the top of their respective games, this is bound to be a mind-blowing piece of art

WEEKLY HOUSE FEATURE

Black Motion

It is clear that Black Motion, which consists of Robert ‘DJ Murda' Mahosana and Thabo ‘Smol' Mabogwane, has been making a serious buzz across the globe with its house music compositions. Following their notable success, th
e duo is fast becoming one of Mzansi's most loved duos.
Even though the group has not been in existence for a long time, the two musical geniuses have been silently producing songs that get endless love on radio and television. In 2010 Black Motion started releasing songs that have been lighting up the dance-floors, including ‘Bhana Shilolo', ‘Banane Mavoko' and ‘Set Me Free'.
While there is certainly something unique that the boys are bringing to the house market, in only the space of year, the group climbed the ladder of mainstream music industry success. "We are amazed at how this journey has progressed and how our new project came together. Though the waiting was long, we learnt to enjoy watching the Almighty open doors and provide just the right moment. Words cannot express what we have learnt and how we have grown through this journey," say the duo.
Besides these accomplishments, the group has in the past worked with big names such as DJ Oskido, DJ Mthi, QT, award-winning vocalist Bantu Soul and Black Coffee, to name but a few. Even though they have composed a string of great songs that are still talk of the town, Black Motion is ready to take the industry by its horns. "Both Smol and I were dancers, so we know the kind of sounds that get people moving," says DJ Murda.
While some fight their battles alone to get to the industry, Murder quickly points to Moses Mokgoko, who he says has been helpful and contributed a lot to the making of Black Motion. "We are lucky to be associated with someone who looked out for us when we were starting off. Moses believed in what we wanted, he helped us build the studio and is always willing to assist whenever we are in need."
Commenting on the album that is about to come out entitled "Talking To The Drums", the duo says that even though there has been intense pressure to continue to put together quality songs, they are not bothered as their new album will prove that Black Motion is certainly not a one hit wonder pair. "We believe that this project is solid and have remixes of songs that people will easily relate to," they conclude.
It is not surprising that Black Motion has swiftly climbed the ladder of success in next to no time. Whatever the two cook up in the studio, it is always a joint effort. Their solo album, which comes out this week, is yet another testimony that the two talented young spinners from Pretoria mean business.

VUSI NOVA "I'D RATHER GO BLIND"

There's a new talent in the South African music space that goes by the name of Vusi Nova. One thing for sure, the Soweto born artist can sing!
Taking a step back to the oldies, the artist decided to do a rendition of Etta James - I'd Rather Go Blind.
Originally written by Ellington Jordan and co-credited to Billy Foster, Vusi's take on the song is something else. The talent impressively swings so well; sticks close to the melody throughout and maintains the high notes like he's just doing a vocal warm up.
Truth be told, the youngster really did justice to the song. This one will not go down unnoticed. After all; it's a beautiful rendition.
The video of this jam is also on another level. The set-up and overall video texture is up to standard. Watch below and don't forget to leave a comment.

CULOE DE SONG ALBUM COMING SOON

“I’m a DJ, I’m a producer, I’m an artist, I am a child of the Universe.” The Eshowe born Afro-house DJ Culolethu Zulu, famously known as Culoe De Song, says he’s album Exodus is almost ready for release. Having recently spent time in studio with Afro-soul singer Thandiswa Mazwai and Kobomo, Culoe is starting to push the excitement about the release.
He says he has been taking his time with the album working the collaborations, also, he carries on to say that there might be an international flavour on the album with a Carl Thomas remix as-well as doing some work with American R&B artist Glen Lewis on a recorded track called ‘Good One’.
Some of the collaborations he has been speaking about pre-seeding the release of the album ‘Exodus’ might not actually make it onto the album, however though, he says he has a lot more on the vocals this time, it’s basically a matter of choosing the song to use as the single.
Culoe De Song is being quite particular about how he wants the album to sound, thus pleased about the song he did with Shota and another artist Thandie Draai. In the pipeline he’s set to do a collab with Soul Star, a guy from Shepstone called Happy, so if it’s a particular sound he is looking for, Culoe is certainly making the efforts to achieve that.
I'm a DJ , I'm a Producer , I'm an Artist , A child of the Universe!

The Soil Getting A Standing Novation Once Again!!

The cheering and applause never seems to stop when the superb trio is on stage. After receiving the very first standing novation for a South African act in New York at the Apollo, the Soil has done it again but now in their home ground South Africa Carnival City in Ekurhuleni. For the first time ever a South African Line-up managed to fill the huge "Big Top Arena" with only 2 headlining acts, "The Soil and Zonke". After their performance The Soil got a well deserved standing novation.

Leaving no Stones unturned was Zonke who also gave a stunning performance, blessing people with her angelic voice. As you would imagine she murdered it with the last song that she performed "Feelings".

Congratulations to Thikho Events Management for organising such an incredible show.

2013 SAMC to share digital platforms opportunities & empower music practitioners with business skills

Africa is proving herself as a force to be reckoned with in the global music scene, but all that will be like water under the bridge if practitioners have no business sense to make their music bear fruits.

Now in its 10 propelled Southern Africa music conference (SAMC), which attracts delegates/attendees from Kenya, Tshwane, Botswana, Rustenburg, Namibia, Cape Town, Polokwane, Mbombela, PE, Bloemfontein and more areas, takes place in both Joburg and Durban for the first time in the same year. The DAC, NYDA and Gauteng Dept. of Sports, Arts and Culture (Midrand only) sponsored conference kicks off @Club Truth in Midrand, Gauteng, from 1 - 4th July, then hits Durban’s Dockland Hotel from 9 - 11

Unlike our fore bearers in the industry who died poor such as the great Mahlathini, Brown Dash, Busi Mhlongo and many more, because of a lack of informative platforms, the SAMC seeks to change such a fate by empowering music business practitioners. True to www.forbes.com’s statement: “It used to be enough for a celebrity to act or sing really well. Today celebs need to be businesses,” the organisers have taken it upon themselves to create “business savvy musicians, marketers, producers and practitioners”.

With the music industry vastly moving to digital platforms, this year’s main themes at the conferences are Digital platforms, stakeholders in the market and global opportunities for music. Industry experts like Oskido, Vinny, Ralf Gum (SA/Germany), Rocco (France), Christos, Greg, Fresh, Chappel and Zinhle are some of the respected industry who will speak on these issues and various other relevant and vital subjects.

Comments the legendary Vinny Da Vinci: “If one looks at the SAMC track record since day 1, years ago, one can see that we really have made strides in the game. In the beginning young people came to the conference I think mainly because of ‘curiosity’ and simply also because they were ‘fascinated’ by the DJ and the PRODUCER thing... That led to most of them getting into the game – becoming DJs and producers.  A lot of them were like ‘VINNY, I’M A DJ SO HOW DO I BECOME LIKE YOU? Those were the kinds of questions we were getting and they didn’t know or think that it can be a career at the same time.”

“So over the years we tried to lead them in the right direction using our own experiences. Now that all that is done, it’s now time for them to take it to the next level hence we are now talking about opportunities that are out there using your music as a tool especially as a young producer/musician.”

Adds Vinny: “The one thing that I also think is most important as well is for the youngsters to treat the game as a job - just like any 9 to 5. I believe that once that happens, they will become business minded because the industry today is all about business and professionalism. Basically one should try and know the game, know his/her strengths and focus on that and in the end do the best that they can.

To register for the conference go to www.djusa.co.za or info@djusa.co.za. Tickets are only R150.
