13TH METRO FM AWARDS FILLED WITH SURPRISE AND HISTORY

The Metro FM Awards went very well with a few surprises and some moments of history being made.

Mafikizolo won the best group, best African pop album and best produced album awards for Reunited. This was expected as Mafikizolo put together a great album and released incredible singles that got people dancing throughout the whole of 2013. Mafikizolo owned the night on Saturday by winning the most awards.
History was made when Kwesta won the best Hip Hop Album with only just a digital release for DAKAR, never in the history of SA Awards has any South African artist won best album for an album only released digitally. Kwesta continues to prove

why he is the King of African Rap.
One of the biggest surprises of the day was the New Comer Award which went to Happy, many people expected Ifani to win and unexpectedly Happy scooped the award. Votes represent the people and numbers don't lie.

The theme for the 13th annual music awards was "Celebrating 20 Years of Beat", and featured performances by Thebe, who sang Groovers Prayer, and Zola with Unathi Msengana performed Sana Lwami.

The stripped-down stage at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Conference Centre featured some screens and minimal lighting, and there was no live band this year
Oskido Mdlongwa received a lifetime achievement award and shared the best collaboration and song of the year award with Professor and DJ Bucks for Uhuru’s hit song Y-Tjukuja.

Robbie Malinga won a lifetime achievement award.

Some in the audience felt that hosts' Phat Joe and Pear Thusi jokes fell flat and focused mainly on Boity and her photograph in the Marie Claire Naked issue.

Da Les and fellow rapper AKA then performed a song alongside DreamTeam and Xhosa rapper iFani.

The audience were brought to their feet when Zola with Unathi Msengana, Trompies, Thebe, Mandoza sung a medley of kwaito hits from the early nineties.
