VUSI NOVA AND JUDITH SEPHUMA URGE LEADERS TO INVEST IN AGRICULTURE

Nineteen African artists who recorded a song to urge leaders to make a meaningful investment in agriculture have come together once again with an open letter to African leadership, urging heads to fulfil their promises of investing in the industry.

In February this year these artists, representing 11 countries, recorded Cocoa na Chocolate, a song with one message: invest in agriculture, it pays. The movement has since petitioned 2 million African citizens to add their voice.

The artists feel that farming and agriculture, once pillars of African society, are being neglected.

The upbeat song, which has garnered 139 000 hits in four months, features a long list of some of the biggest names on the continent, including Kunle Ayo and Femi Kuti from Nigeria, Liz Ogumbo from Kenya, and Judith Sephuma and Vusi Nova from South Africa.

Jazz singer and songwriter Sephuma says the campaign seeks to encourage leaders to support agriculture as a way of creating jobs for Africans.

“Having grown up with a strong agricultural schooling system of the past, where agriculture was encouraged, I feel the sector has a role to play in creating sustainable jobs.”
