So we’re all in agreement that 2014 was a big year for the South African music industry. Records were sold, rhymes spit ,credibility cemented and Beef's either made bigger or started. But, what stood out for us is that big brands (corporate to you and I), noticed and showed appreciation of the hard work put IN by the artists. So here are South African artists who were involved in lucrative(hopefully) deals with the coolest brands this year.
CASSPER NYOVEST – RAN BAN
Refiloe Phoolo reached gold status with his debut album Tsholofelo. The hip hop artist was so happy he dyed his beard gold and got his whole squad doing the same, this including Ämantmbazane hitmaker Riky Rick. Ray Ban clearly likes his style they signed him as an official ambassador.
MAFIKIZOLO – MTN
We’ve lost count on how many awards this band has collected this year. From sweeping out the Metro Awards to getting BET nominations. They killed it everywhere – from Nigeria to the U.S. Network company MTN used this duo to promote their ‘Win a Plane’ competition. Long after the prize has been won, you’re now likely to see their face on MTN billboard.
KHULI CHANA – KFC
Mnatibawen is a cool track. What is crazy about KFC’s deal with Khuli is that the song is part of an album that was released last year. But Chana power is so mega that the fried chicken franchise used the song’s hook “heh-eh heh-eh” for their ad. Finger lickin’ good stuff…
AKA – GREYGOOSE & HEAD HONCHO
Mr Forbes did really well with his current album, Levels, so much so alcohol label Greygoose got on the bandwagon. They announced that AKA was going to be their brand ambassador. Not to be outdone, cool kids’ clothing label Head Honcho also did a line of fashionware with him. These are really cool deals, man.
Pearl Modiadie - Avon
Pearl Modiadie signed the deal as the endorsement face...The deal will saw Modiadie launching a new fragrance aspire by a floral bouquet of bold orange blossom and jasmine combined with warm woods and precious musks.
Bonang Matheba - Revlon & Ciroc
Joining Halle Berry, Olivia Wilde and Emma Stone, Bonang Matheba was the first Revlon representative outside of the United States.According to a Revlon press statement, Matheba is the embodiment of bold glamour.“We searched tirelessly for a local celebrity who would inspire young South African women to own every moment by looking their best,” said Pumza Payi, marketing director of Revlon South Africa. “Bonang was the perfect choice because she is quintessentially Revlon on all levels.”
David Tlale , Dj Dimplez , Da L.E.S & Bonang
South African designer David Tlale as well as South African media personalities Bonang Matheba, Da L.E.S and DJ Dimples have been unveiled as the brand ambassadors for Ciroc Africa, a quite popular vodka.According to Ciroc, David Tlale, Bonang Matheba, Da L.E.S and DJ Dimplez were chosen as ambassadors because they are influencer's in each of their niches.
