2014 was a special year for K.O and the entire Cashtime Life. The year saw them release Caracara which was one of the biggest Hip Hop songs in the history of South African Hip Hop and the song’s video was the first SA Hip Hop song to ever reach a million views on YouTube. K.O went on to release his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Skhanda Republic’ which is in stores and is reportedly approaching gold sales.
It seem all the work K.O and Cashtime Life have put in is getting international recognition as the BBC Radio 1Xtra, a digital radio station in the United Kingdom specialising in urban music selects K.O as one of the five African artists to watch in 2015 in the stations’ yearly list. The other four African artists that got the nod are Silvastone, Sèyi Shay, Patoranking and Sauti Sol. This is the first time a South African artist gets the nod.
The African artists’ list is compiled by DJ Edu, BBC 1xtra’s first and still only anchor for the African mix show DNA (Destination Africa), he is solely responsible for the inception and growth of an audience that has increased over the last seven years. Via this platform Edu has been able to break some of the biggest names on the global African music scene in the UK – artists such as K’Naan and Nneka both of whom went on to win the coveted MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Award.
