Metro FM DJ and Idols judge Unathi Msengana has been temporarily suspended following her Twitter spat with a 19-year-old student
Msengana sparked an uproar on Twitter on Monday after she challenged a student who had called into the radio show she hosts with Glen Lewis to complain about the University of Stellenbosch’s language policy.
Explaining her story, the student said that when she’d applied to the university she was never told she’d have to take her classes in Afrikaans.
“I applied to study at Stellenbosch University in 2009. I was assured by everyone throughout that process that Afrikaans wouldn’t be an issue — Thanga Labo (@musa_gwebani) August 24, 2015.
Trying to understand the issue, Msengana asked the student what was meant by the term Afrikaans “wouldn’t be an issue” and whether or not the university had actually told the student this in writing.
After facing a backlash of criticism on Twitter for appearing to take the university’s side, Msengana sent an insulting direct message to one of her fans after she had mocked the Idols’ judge on the social network.
SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told DESTINY that it had been decided to take Msengana off air until they had investigated the matter. He explained that the discussion around Stellenbosch was scheduled and Msengana was due to answer questions on the issue.
“The questions she asked on air were valid and there was nothing wrong with her questions,” Kganyago said. “We decided to put her off until we finish engaging with her about the issue. We have no control over deejays and what they do in their private space, but our deejays should know that they are the representatives of the brand,” he said. adding that their actions should never negatively impact the station’s brand.
“I cannot say when she will be back; she could be back at work tomorrow or any other day. The sooner we finish engaging with her, the quicker she can be scheduled back on air,” Kganyago said.
