The
man behind the smash hit single Memeza, Benny Maverick took explains
and song and breaks down the meaning and the concept behind the song.
Memeza has been a massive hit in the streets, a national
anthem of note and is played on every corner and has made it onto several
memes. He has numerous hits before this one with Awuboni and Vosho being
some of them. But Memeza was the song that really gives him the break to enter
into the mainstream music industry.
“We
were in studio just making beats with the guys from Spirit Banger. Then we made
this dope beat and then I started chanting “ngizo memeza”. This is something
that I’d actually heard from some guy in the club. This guy would stand
anywhere in the club and scream to the top of his voice and the whole club… the
entire club would vibe with him”. He found the guy, Dladla, hit him up and put
him on the song.
The
concept of the music video is to “memeza” against all the injustices that the
country has been facing for the past couple of months. Benny Maverick shot the
video at UKZN and the entire concept of the video is “a March situation” and
the march is against women abuse, fees must fall, 90% local content quota and
anything that you want to raise attention around.
