SOUL crooner Chris Walker paid tribute to Metro FM presenter Eddie Zondi, who died recently.
He said Zondi put him on the map.
US singer Walker told thousands of jazz fans at the Pietermaritzburg Jazz Festival at Golden Horse Casino on Saturday that were it not for Zondi, his music would not be popular in Mzansi.
“I would like to thank Eddie Zondi for playing my songs on the radio. Today I’m recognised by many, especially in South Africa. With the warm welcome I received, I will be back very soon,” he said.
People sang along to Walker’s hits such as Giving You All My Loveand Someone To Love Me Forever. Afropop sensation Naima K warmed up fans with tunes like Lelilanga.
Lira didn’t disappoint either. She sang a cover version of Sade’s The Sweetest Taboo.
Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu then took the crowd down memory lane with their old classics.
Organiser Brian Zuma thanked fans for coming in numbers. Jazz lover Zinhle Mbokazi was impressed. She said: “What a show!”
